2026 Babyproofing Checklist for Atlanta Parents

If you are currently in the nesting phase of your pregnancy, you probably have a nursery to-do list that feels a mile long. You’re washing tiny clothes, organizing diapers, and choosing the perfect crib. But there is one major project that is much easier to tackle before your baby arrives: babyproofing.

At Atlanta Birth Collective, we believe a safe home is the foundation of a peaceful postpartum experience. Whether you live in a historic bungalow in Inman Park or a modern townhome in Alpharetta, every home has unique "baby-level" hazards. This guide focuses on high-impact safety measures and the latest 2026 standards to help you stay ahead of your crawler.

While you’re securing your home, don't forget to secure your support system. Learn more about our Postpartum Doula Services in Atlanta to help you navigate these early milestones.

Get Down on the Floor for A Baby’s Eye View

The most effective way to babyproof isn't just by buying gadgets, it’s by changing your perspective. While you are still in your second or third trimester, we recommend literally getting down on your hands and knees and crawling through your home. This move is also great for optimal baby positioning.

When you see your living room or kitchen from six inches off the ground, you’ll notice things you would otherwise miss: an enticing electrical outlet behind the sofa, a dangling lamp cord, or a small object tucked under a cabinet. Seeing your home from this "baby’s eye view" helps you identify exactly where your child’s curiosity might lead them before they even arrive.

Protecting Air Quality

When we think of babyproofing, we usually think of plastic outlet covers. However, one of the most important things you can do for your baby’s developing systems happens in the air they breathe. This starts with your home's HVAC system; ensure you are changing your furnace filters regularly and upgrading to a higher MERV rating to catch smaller particles.

Many common household items like plug-in air fresheners, scented candles, and synthetic laundry detergents contain fragrances that emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and phthalates. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has linked these synthetic fragrances to respiratory irritation and endocrine disruption. Because newborns have developing lungs, they are far more sensitive to these "invisible" pollutants.

In addition to removing synthetic scents, incorporating high-quality air filtration is a core safety strategy. Scientific research highlights that True HEPA filters can remove 99.97% of airborne particles like dust, pollen, and bacteria. When choosing an air filter for the nursery, ensure the unit is "ozone-free," as ionizers can produce ozone, which is a known lung irritant. I love AirDoctor for my family, but the filters can get expensive!

The Atlanta Birth Collective Babyproofing Checklist

Use this room-by-room guide to secure your home. We recommend walking through your house with this list while you are still in your pregnancy nesting phase to get the heavy lifting out of the way early.

Air Quality

  • Change your HVAC filters to high-efficiency versions to reduce circulating dust and allergens.

  • Use a "True HEPA" air purifier in the nursery for maximum particle and VOC removal.

  • Remove plug-in air fresheners and scented candles to eliminate VOC exposure.

  • Switch to fragrance-free laundry detergents and cleaning supplies to protect developing lungs.

Kitchen and Dining Area

Living and Play Spaces

  • Anchor all heavy furniture (TVs, bookshelves, dressers) to wall studs.

  • Apply soft edge guards to sharp coffee table corners and fireplace hearths.

  • Check all window blinds; replace corded versions with cordless or install safety cleats.

  • Place non-slip pads under all area rugs to prevent trips.

Bathrooms and Laundry

  • Install a toilet lid lock to prevent drowning hazards.

  • Set your water heater to 120°F (49°C) to prevent accidental scalding.

  • Store all medications, vitamins, and mouthwash in a locked high cabinet.

  • Keep laundry detergent and pods completely out of reach and sight.

Nursery and Bedrooms

  • Ensure the crib is empty of blankets, pillows, and bumpers (Safe Sleep standards).

  • Check that crib slats are no more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart.

  • Place the baby monitor cord at least 3 feet away from the crib.

  • Swap standard outlet plates for sliding outlet covers.
