Questions to Ask an Atlanta Doula Before You Hire Your Birth Team

If you’ve been searching “Atlanta doula,” “doula near me,” or “what questions should I ask a doula,” you’re not alone. There are a lot of lists out there.

But after supporting families through home births, hospital inductions, VBACs, NICU stays, and even bereavement, we’ve learned something important:

The best doula questions start with you.

Before you ever sit down with a doula (or a birth collective like ours), it helps to get clear on what matters most to you. Then your questions become less, “Do I sound like I know what I’m doing?” and more, “Are we actually a good fit for each other?”

As a small team of Atlanta doulas and photographers at Atlanta Birth Collective, here’s how we’d help you through that.

You don’t have to book a Woodstock studio, often we can create that same “studio look” just by shifting a little furniture around in your home.

Get Clear on What Matters to You First

Every family is different. Before you pull up a big list of questions to ask a doula, pause and ask yourself:

  • What kind of support do I actually want?

  • What gives me a sense of safety or comfort?

  • What would make this experience feel held, even if things get hard?

You might jot a few notes under these headings in your phone:

Atlanta Doula costs and level of support

Do you want text support only, full on-call labor support, or continuous care from pregnancy through early postpartum? Is birth photography or videography part of your vision? What’s your realistic budget, and where are you willing to stretch if the support feels right?

Doula experience level + training

Does you care how long your doula has actually been a doula? How many births they’ve attended? If they have supported VBAC, breech, twins, inductions, cesareans, NICU stays, home births, or other situations? What if you experience miscarriage or stillbirth, do you want someone who is comfortable holding both bereavement and birth? Some doulas will drop you after a loss, as they aren’t trained to offer support. See our Bereavement post here . Are you wanting a doula trained in hypnobirthing, sign language, or speak another language altogether?

Personality and communication style

Do you feel safest with someone calm and quiet, someone warm and chatty, or someone very direct? Do you want a lot of check-ins, or would you rather your doula wait for you to reach out? Are you wanting a strong level of professionalism, or a more cozy BFFL approach?

Sensory preferences (perfume, sound, touch)

Are you scent-sensitive to perfume or essential oils? Does the doulas voice distract you or fill you with comfort and confidence? How do you feel about touch in labor? Do you love massage, or prefer no touch unless you ask? Do keep in mind that the way a doula carries herself out of the birth space, is not indicative of how they behave in your labor room. This is why questioning can be so helpful.

Faith and worldview

Do you want someone who shares your faith or spiritual language? Or would you prefer a doula who holds space quietly and follows your lead? View of the world and/or political affiliation? Are any of these things important to you? Most doulas remain neutral unless you request otherwise. But there are some strict Christian-based doulas who only accept clients who align with their faith.

Birth Photography and other add-ons

Do you want your birth documented? Photos, video, or both? Do you like the idea of a small team that blends birth doula support with photography and videography so you’re not managing multiple separate vendors? What about overnight postpartum services? Placenta encapsulation?

Insurance reimbursement and financial benefits

Does your employer offer any support for doula care, mental health, lactation, or fertility through programs like Carrot, Maven, or a similar benefit? A quick email to HR asking, “Do we have any benefits that cover doula support, childbirth education, or postpartum services?” can sometimes unlock options families don’t realize they have. Not all doulas qualify for these options.

Once you’re clear on these pieces, you’re ready to bring real, grounded questions into a consult. YAY!

Questions to Ask an Atlanta Doula in Your Consult

You do not have to ask all of these. Pick the ones that line up with the priorities you just named and the things your nervous system is most worried about.

Here are some options you can literally copy into your notes app:

Support style and personality

  • How would you describe your support style during pregnancy and labor?

  • When your clients are anxious or overwhelmed, what does support from you actually look like?

  • How do you usually communicate with clients during pregnancy (text, email, phone calls) and how often?

Experience, VBAC, and bereavement

  • Do you have experience with births such as VBAC, induction, home birth, or my specific hospital?

  • How have you supported families through miscarriage, stillbirth, or medically complex births?

  • How do you support someone who is pregnant again after a loss or a traumatic birth?

Preferences, partners, nurses, and providers

  • How do you support my partner so they still feel involved and important? How would you support me if it’s “just me” by choice?

  • What does it look like when you and the nurses or OB/midwife don’t see something the same way?

  • How do you help us communicate with staff without speaking over us?

  • What if you don’t agree with my preferences?

Your maternity session doesn’t have to feel stiff or posed. You can simply cuddle up, laugh with your partner, and be yourselves! We’ll gently guide you so you feel comfortable and look your best.

On-call life and availability

  • When I’m near my due date, how quickly do you usually reply to texts or calls?

  • What happens if I go into labor when you are already at another birth or have family commitments?

  • How many clients do you take each month, and how do you protect yourself from burnout?

Sensory preferences, boundaries, and faith

  • Are you open to avoiding perfume or strong scents (hair, laundry, lotions) if they bother me?

  • How do you feel about me asking for more or less touch during labor in the moment?

  • How do you handle faith or spiritual language in birth? Do you bring your own into the room, or follow the family’s lead?

Photography, videography, and add-ons

  • Do you offer birth photography or videography yourself, or work with someone who does?

  • If I work with Atlanta Birth Collective, how do doula support and photography work together in the room?

  • What additional services do you offer - childbirth education, postpartum visits, bereavement support, or ongoing postpartum coaching?

Costs, packages, and benefits

  • What is included in your doula package, and what would be considered an add-on?

  • Have you had clients use employer benefits, Carrot, Maven, HSA, or FSA funds to help pay for doula support?

  • If my HR department offers reimbursement for doula care or childbirth education, do you provide invoices or documentation I can submit?

You do not need to sound polished when you ask these. The point is to watch how your body feels while they answer. Do you feel calmer, clearer, more grounded? Do you feel rushed, dismissed, or talked over?

Choosing the Right Atlanta Doula or Collective for You

At the end of the day, choosing a doula isn’t about finding the “perfect” person on paper. It’s about finding a team who can hold your preferences and particular mix of joy, fear, history, and hope.

When you’re deciding, you might ask yourself:

  • Do I feel more at ease after talking with them?

  • Do they respect my preferences around communication, sensory things, faith, and family dynamics?

  • Do they have experience or humility around what matters in my story, whether that’s VBAC, home birth, hospital birth, bereavement, anxiety, or something else?

  • Do I feel like I could text them on a hard day without shame?
