CACCP-Certified Chiropractor
Understanding the "Extra Mile" of Pediatric and Prenatal Certification
Written by Dr. Fabiola Menéndez
As a parent or a parent, your "village" likely includes many incredible professionals, from your OB-GYN and midwives to your doulas at Atlanta Birth Collective. When it comes to adding a chiropractor to that team, you might notice that many offices welcome children and prenatal patients. However, you may also see a specific set of letters: CACCP.
Today, I want to share what those letters mean and why I chose to pursue this path for the families in our Woodstock community.
What is a CACCP-Certified Chiropractor?
While all chiropractors are licensed to care for patients of all ages, a CACCP (Certified by the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics) designation signifies a deep dive into the world of pediatric and perinatal care.
This certification is granted by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and involves over 200 hours of post-graduate education, rigorous testing, and a commitment to evidence-based protocols specifically for pregnant mothers and infants.
Think of it like this: all doctors are trained in general medicine, but some choose to spend years extra becoming pediatricians. In the same way, a CACCP-certified chiropractor has spent hundreds of extra hours studying the unique neurology, biomechanics, and developmental milestones of your little ones.
The Value of the Journey
When it came to the smallest members of our community, I wanted to master the most gentle, age-appropriate techniques possible. I was able to achieve that by going through the CACCP certification.
This isn’t a "one and done" certificate, either. To maintain this standing, I participate in 12 hours of specialized continuing education every two years. This ensures that the care I provide is always informed by the latest research in pediatric wellness and nervous system function.
The Webster Technique & Prenatal Care
A common question we get is, "Isn't Webster enough?" You may notice that many chiropractors are Webster Certified, a fantastic tool that focuses specifically on balancing the pelvis during pregnancy. While I use the Webster Technique daily, the CACCP is a broader commitment.
Because we are trained extensively in the prenatal population, we understand that a baby’s journey doesn't start at birth. By supporting the mother’s health and pelvic balance before the baby arrives, we are setting the stage for better infant biomechanics from day one.
Understanding Infant Biomechanics: The "Why" Behind the Care
You might wonder why a baby, who hasn't been sitting at a desk or lifting heavy boxes, would need an adjustment. The answer lies in biomechanics, which is the study of the mechanical laws relating to the movement or structure of living organisms.
When we at an infant's biomechanics, we aren't just looking at a "miniature adult." A newborn's spine is C-shaped, their joints are mostly cartilage, and their nervous system is developing at a lightning-fast pace.
Whether birth is fast, slow, assisted, or surgical, the physical pressure on a newborn's delicate neck and spine can be significant. If a tiny joint isn't moving quite right, it can create a ripple effect in their nervous system.
Pediatric Chiropractic for Infant Reflux, Colic, and Torticollis
Whether it’s a digestive struggle or a feeding challenge, these are often outward signs of an inward neurological "traffic jam."
Latching Issues: A successful latch requires a baby to open their mouth wide and move their jaw and neck freely. If there is tension from the birth process in the upper neck or jaw (TMJ), a baby may struggle to latch comfortably or efficiently. In these cases, we love to collaborate with International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) to ensure both the baby’s biomechanics and the feeding mechanics are supported.
Tongue & Lip Ties: When a baby has an oral restriction, it often creates compensatory tension throughout the entire body, especially in the floor of the mouth, the neck, and the shoulders. We work to release the body tension and jaw restrictions that often accompany ties, helping the baby gain better oral function. We frequently collaborate with specialized Occupational Therapists (OTs) who focus on oral restrictions to provide a comprehensive, functional approach for the baby.
Colic & Reflux: If the nerves that talk to the digestive system are under stress, it can lead to "fussiness" or spitting up. Gentle adjustments help the body move back into a "rest and digest" state.
Constipation: Healthy digestion requires a baby to be in a state of ease. If their nervous system is under stress, it can lead to a "backup" in their digestive rhythm. By addressing spinal tension, we help support the natural flow of their system, making those tummy troubles a thing of the past.
Body Tension: Some babies feel "tight" or constantly arch their backs. This is often a sign of a nervous system that is stuck in a high-stress "fight or flight" mode.
Torticollis & Head Shape: If your baby favors looking to one side, it may be due to a restriction in the upper neck. Left unaddressed, this can sometimes lead to a flat spot on the head (plagiocephaly). By restoring movement to the neck, we help them move freely and support a natural head shape.
Gentle Touch You Can Trust
If the idea of newborn chiropractic sounds scary, let us put your mind at ease. It is completely natural to feel a bit hesitant about the idea of a newborn seeing a chiropractor. However, there is no need to worry, pediatric adjustments are incredibly gentle.
We use fingertip-light pressure, roughly the same amount you would use to check the ripeness of an avocado. This precise, gentle touch helps restore balance to your baby’s developing nervous system and helps them find comfort and ease.
A Collaborative Village in Woodstock, GA
In our office, we believe in a "village" approach. We love working alongside doulas, midwives, pediatricians, International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), specialized Occupational Therapists (OTs) and pediatric physical therapists to ensure your baby has the best start possible. Our goal is never to discredit general chiropractic care, but rather to offer a specialized, high-touch experience for the unique needs of the prenatal and pediatric population.
When you choose a CACCP-certified chiropractor, you aren't just getting an adjustment. You are getting a practitioner who has dedicated hundreds of hours to the specific, delicate needs of both the mother and the child, and one who knows exactly how to coordinate with the rest of your specialized care team.
At Vibra Chiropractic, we are honored to serve the Woodstock community. Our office is a warm, community-oriented environment where your comfort and your baby’s nervous system are our top priorities. Whether you are navigating the physical shifts of pregnancy or seeking gentle support for your newborn, we would love to be a part of your wellness village.
